Author (Horrible Histories)and SAFC supporter, Terry Deary shares his most memorable song and story: Elvis Presley- Can’t Help Falling in Love With You.
I probably first heard it back in 1962 when I was a teenager. There was no Radio One to listen to pop music. If you wanted to listen to pop music in the evenings you had to tune into Radio Luxembourg on a very crackly transistor radio and you didn’t get the full quality of Elvis’s voice.
Then about 1955, sixty years ago, I started coming to Sunderland football club matches.
Then they opened this stadium, The Stadium of Light and I discovered they’d adopted ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love With You’ as their anthem. When the game kicks off they play a couple of opening lines “Wise Men Say… (sings) and the crowd joins in- very badly. The spinning sound you can hear is probably Elvis turning in his grave.
But it’s a very apt song for Sunderland to adopt because you do sometimes wonder why can’t you help loving this football team, which has thick times, and thin times and the thin times are anorexic. ‘I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You’ gets me every time.
