“This reminds me of my parents.
I was born in Germany. My dad was twenty-four years old. He was in the Royal Engineers on his last deployment working in Bosnia as part of the Peace Keeping Force before coming out into civvies.
It was March 1996 – the coldest winter ever. He was building bridges and staying in a bus depot. Someone lit a lamp but it had the wrong fuel in and when it got knocked over it exploded. There was a giant fire and my dad died.
My Mum needed to find love really quickly. She remarried and I have a half brother.
But she got acute depression. It was torturing her. She committed suicide when I was five.
I live with my Grandma in South Shields,
I’ve had a good life. I can’t complain. It’s just minus the two main people.
When I first heard this song I just thought ‘wow’. It really resonates and makes me feel proud of myself. You know when you feel like you are no one and like you are all alone? This song just put my pieces back together.”
