“My missus chose this for our wedding. At first I thought I’ m not having that! It’s so tacky. I was horrified. It’s the music to the Twilight film. But when you listen to the lyrics it’s decent to be fair. If you haven’t seen the Twilight films it’s okay.
We’ve even got a couple of lines from the lyrics inscribed on our wedding rings. I’ve got ‘colours and promises’. Oh god, I can’t remember what Lauren’s got. She’s gonna batter me, hammer me. I don’t want to get this wrong. I think it’s ‘beauty and all she is’. We got married last Summer.
We’d know each other since we were eleven or twelve. We went to the same secondary school in Durham but didn’t get together ‘til after Uni. I’d been to Salford, She’d been to Leeds. Then we met up on a night out back home.
I proposed in New York. In CentralPark. I’d asked her Dad before I left and got her the ring. Over the years I knew what she’d like. She really wanted one with three stones so I bought it and kept it hidden in my jacket until mid way through our trip.
That day we’d gone skating, gone to the zoo, been to the science museum (she’s a science teacher) gone for a meal in the boat house. It was starting to get dark and I thought ‘better make a move quick’. I got down on one knee- obviously. She was really shocked. I think she knew something was going on but I think she thought that I had something else stupid planned.
We went to Macy’s straight away to phone her Mam. My Mam already knew and so did her Dad but if I’d told her Mam the world would have known about it before I’d even done it!”
